Tarte is a highly popular brand of cosmetics. With over 9 million followers on Instagram, this beauty brand has quickly become one of the cult favorites across the globe.
Tarte Cosmetics are even endorsed by countless beauty influences around the world, and the brand has become known as a makeup bag staple for beauty enthusiasts.
What is so popular about the line of Tarte Cosmetics is that they are known for integrating high performance natural ingredients into their products for only the best results.
The company was founded by make up lover Maureen Kelly, who strived to create a beauty brand that used only the safest ingredients, without any harsh chemicals and preservatives.
The result was Tarte, a makeup brand with all natural ingredients, that launched to fame in 2000.
But, is Tarte cruelty free?

With such an impressive line of products, it is even better news that Tarte is in fact cruelty free. The company is even certified as cruelty free by PETA!
This means that Tarte does not test its products on animals, nor does it test the ingredients or formulas on animals.
In addition, Tarte does not allow suppliers to contribute to animal cruelty or test on animals, and the brand does not pay for third party testing, or allow their products to be tested in countries where it is mandatory by law.
What this means is that Tarte is also not sold in Mainland China, where cosmetics must be tested on animals before they are sold in the country, as Tarte chooses not to participate in this, and therefore has not entered the Chinese market.
Therefore Tarte is cruelty free, as none of their ingredients, formulas or finished products are tested on animals in any part of the world.
However, it should be noted that Tarte is now owned by a company called Kose, which does test on animals where required by law, yet, Tarte has remained cruelty free.
Is Tarte Vegan?
Although Tarte is 100% cruelty free, not all of the products that they sell are completely vegan, as some can contain animal derived ingredients or animal by products.
These are most likely to be beeswax, carmine, lanolin or many other animal based ingredients, which would make the product non vegan.

Is Tarte An Ethical Company?
Tarte could be considered an ethical company as it strives to create natural products that are eco friendly, vegan and cruelty free.
In addition, Tarte has a Tarte Gives Back program, that helps causes such as environmental conservancy, animal rescues, disaster relief, equality, women’s health, fundraisers for natural disasters, and works to protect the ocean’s ecosystem.
In addition, Tarte leads a ‘thoughtfully sourced ingredients’ program to ensure that the company remains sustainable and ethical throughout production.
Despite all the good that they do, Tarte has been the center of controversy in the past, when they released a new line of foundation shades.
Many people cancelled Tarte, because the new shade range seemed to only cater to those with lighter skin tones, and did not have options for people of color.
The company was then part of a racism row, ending up in Tarte writing a new code of ethics concerning diversity and transparency.
Does Tarte Test On Animals?
As a company, Tarte Cosmetics is 100% cruelty free, and chooses not to test on animals or partake in any animal cruelty. In Tarte’s official animal testing policy, the beauty brand states that:
‘tarte cosmetics is a cruelty free cosmetics line and has been since 2000! Tarte makeup and skincare is never tested on animals. We are also an approved PETA participant.’
Furthermore, Tarte has confirmed that they do not test any of their products on animals, or the ingredients in those products on animals either.
In addition, their suppliers are not permitted to test on animals, and the brand does not allow their products to be tested on animals by third parties. This means that Tarte cannot be sold in countries such as Mainland China, as they would need to test the products themselves first.
However, we should tell you that Tarte’s parent company Kose, acquired Tarte in 2014, and this company does test on animals where it is required by law. Tarte has since remained cruelty free and still does not contribute to animal testing or cruelty.
That being said, if you prefer to steer clear of companies that do contribute to the issue of animal cruelty, then you may want to avoid Tarte because of its connections to Kose.
Are Tarte Products Toxic?
You may be wondering if Tarte products are right for you, and your skin. The great thing about Tarte is that the products are made with as many natural ingredients as possible, for safe, clean and non toxic formulas that look after the skin.
For instance, the popular cosmetics company strives to remain non toxic, cruelty free, eco friendly and safe for the environment. In addition, Tarte promises not to include any parabens phthalates, mineral oil or gluten in their products, for a line of impressive, clean and non toxic beauty.
In the official statement from Tarte’s website, the company claims that they wanted to create products that were simultaneously glamorous and made with ‘good for you ingredients’. Tarte states:
‘We’re leaders in the beauty industry, offering eco-chic, cruelty free cosmetics and hypoallergenic, vegan skincare. Every product is packed with naturally derived ingredients and always formulated without the bad stuff like parabens, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfate, triclosan and gluten.’
