Why Is My Bamboo Pillow Flat?

Last Updated on March 29, 2020 by Elsie

I was SO excited when I ordered my very first bamboo pillow! I had read so many great reviews and lots of blogs about the benefits of using a bamboo pillow (especially as an asthmatic, being hypoallergenic was a huge selling point for me, personally) so I was a bit bummed when I found it went flat kinda quickly. Eek. Not really what I was after…

I didn’t really understand why this had happened, so I started my mission to find the core reason this happens, as well as the best solution to this problem. If you’re struggling to understand why your bamboo pillow is flat, then I hope you find my answers as helpful to you as they have been to me!

Why Do Bamboo Pillows Go Flat?

There are two reasons bamboo pillows are flat: One is from use, and the other reason is simply receiving it flat in delivery. The great news is both are normal and both have easy fixes.

Bamboo pillows (and pretty much any sort of pillow) will begin to flatten due to compression from the weight of our heads, as well as the accumulation of moisture that naturally occurs from your body. If you live in an environment with higher humidity, or tend to run hot like my husband does, then this may increase how quickly it begins to flatten – good to know!

The best solution is to regularly leave your pillow in the sun to air out, or by using a dryer every so often to ensure it is well dried out, reshaped and refluffed. A quick kneading of your pillow is probably a good idea too whenever you make your bed.

Why Is My Bamboo Pillow Flat When First Purchased?

Bamboo pillows are often shipped vacuum sealed, as it is much more cost effective for the company – and you – to send out this way. It also helps prevent damages in transit. Is there anything worse than receiving your order in the mail only to see it was damaged in transit to you?

How To Activate A Brand New Bamboo Pillow With Shredded Memory Foam.

  1. Unwrap your new bamboo pillow and dispose of the packaging immediately – the packaging is a choking and breathing hazard for children and animals
  2. Shake the pillow to help move air and memory foam around. Use your hands to break up any clumps you might feel in the pillow. (You may notice that the foam has a slight smell, this is 100% normal for brand new memory foam pillows and will go away pretty quickly.)
  3. Toss the pillow in the dryer on the lowest heat setting for 10-20 minutes (add a dryer sheet to help get rid of the new foam smell faster).

HOT TIP: 2-3 tennis balls in the dryer with your bamboo pillow do a smashing job of fluffing your bamboo pillow too!

When the pillows come out of the dryer, you’ll feel how soft and fluffy bamboo pillows are designed to be. Congratulations and welcome to the club!!

If you don’t have a dryer, try to knead the pillow a few times from every angle – particularly the corners – then leave it out in the sun to air out.

How To Activate A Brand New Bamboo Pillow With A Solid Memory Foam Insert.

Do NOT place a bamboo pillow with a solid memory foam insert into the dryer – this can cause the memory foam to disintegrate, fall apart and deform. I would avoid the dryer like the plague.

Just like any other pillow or cushion, you can give your bamboo pillow a fluff by hand to make it softer and more comfortable. Knead the pillow at the corners while fluffing it up like a normal pillow to get it to the softness and shape you desire. I recommend you do this automatically any time your make your bed to guarantee yourself the best night’s sleep possible.

What to avoid:

A bamboo pillow with regular foam – not memory foam. It is far cheaper, but for a reason.

Once regular foam begins to flatten, it doesn’t bounce back. You won’t be able to reshape or properly refluff a cheap, regular foam bamboo pillow. It doesn’t provide the comfort of memory foam, nor is it able to support your head and neck in the same way. It definitely doesn’t last as longer either. Avoid at all costs!

Conclusion

Fluffing up your bamboo pillow to make it feel more comfortable to sleep on at night is easy and should be added to your weekly routine. Just be sure to take extra care with the company’s instructions because bamboo pillows can easily be ruined by extreme temperatures and rough washing and drying cycles.

Bamboo pillows are a hypoallergenic, clean, and ultra-comfortable option that can help give you a great night’s sleep. The bamboo mixed into the cover fabric helps keep your head cool at night and makes it easier for people with certain sensitivities or allergies to breathe easy while they sleep. It’s such a no-brainer.

Now enjoy the best night’s sleep you’ve ever experienced!
